US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, MAY 2019

In May 2019, US construction spending (seasonally adjusted annual rate) declined 0.8 per cent to $1,294 billion. This follows a revised gain of 0.4 per cent reported in April 2019 when construction spending was estimated at $1,304 billion. Year-over-year, US construction spending is 2.3 per cent below May 2018.

  • Private sector construction decreased 0.7 per cent in May to $953 billion.  This is down 6.3 per cent over May 2018.
  • Public sector construction declined 0.9 per cent in May to $341 billion.  This is up 10.8 per cent over May 2018
  • Residential construction decreased 0.6 per cent in May to $505 billion.  This is down 11.2 per cent over May 2018. 
  • Non-residential construction declined 0.9 per cent in May to $789 billion.  This is up 4.4 per cent over May 2018.

Year-to-date, US construction spending is down 0.5 per cent over January-May 2018.

  • Private sector construction decreased 4.1 per cent
  • Public sector construction increased 11.5 per cent
  • Residential construction declined by 8.9 per cent
  • Non-residential construction grew by 5.8 per cent
