In Jan-Sep 2019, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 6.2% ($268.3 million) over Jan-Sep 2018, to $4.6 billion.

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Sep 2019 with the same period last year the largest dollar value increases were in Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($161.7 million), Consumer Goods ($84.0 million), Motor vehicles/Parts ($58.2 million). The largest dollar value decreases were in Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials ($80.7 million), Metal/Mineral Products ($27.8 million), and Energy ($25.9 million).
On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in
- Machinery/Equipment by 60.8% ($55.4 million)
- Metal/Ores by 42.7% ($20.8 million)
- Transportation Equipment by 26% ($10.4 million)
- Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 19.2% ($161.7 million)
- Electronics by 7.8% ($9.4 million)
- Consumer Goods by 7.5% ($84.0 million)
- Motor vehicles/Parts by 6.1% ($58.2 million)
- Special Transactions by 6.1% ($2.5 million)
- Chemical, plastic, rubber by 0.1% ($0.2 million),
and export values decreased in
- Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 12.5% (-$80.7 million)
- Metal/Mineral Products by 16% (-$27.8 million)
- Energy by 65.5% (-$25.9 million).
YTD by Province
In Jan-Sep 2019, Prince Edward Island reported the highest increase (10.6%), while New Brunswick reported the highest decline (8.3%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Sep 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 6.2% gain in merchandise trade exports. Canada reported a 1.2% gain in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Sep 2018.
Excluding energy exports, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (35.4%) while British Columbia reported the highest decline (8.3%) in Non-energy exports over Jan-Sep 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 6.8% gain in Non-energy exports. Canada reported a 1.8% gain in Non-energy exports over Jan-Sep 2018.

Nova Scotia’s trade continues to diversity.
In Nova Scotia Jan-Sep 2019, international export trade to all countries increased 6.2% to $4,629.8 million over Jan-Sep 2018.
- Consumer Goods led the way with a value of $1.2 billion (26% share), followed by
- Motor vehicles/Parts with a value of $1.016 billion (22% share),
- Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $1.003 billion (22% share),
- Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $567.0 million (12% share),
- Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $241.1 million (5% share),
- Machinery/Equipment with a value of $146.5 million (3% share),
- Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $145.5 million (3% share),
- Electronics with a value of $130.0 million (3% share),
- Metal/Ores with a value of $69.6 million (2% share),
- Transportation Equipment with a value of $50.3 million (1% share),
- Special Transactions with a value of $43.2 million (1% share), and,
- Energy with a value of $13.6 million (<1% share),
In the period Jan-Sep 2018 vs Jan-Sep 2019, year-to-date export trade to the United States increased 5.9% ($161.7 million) to $2.9 billion. The United States share of total Nova Scotia exports was 62.5%.
Year-to-date export trade to China increased 22.3% ($137.3 million) to $752.3 million. China's share of total Nova Scotia exports was 16.2%.
Year-to-date export trade to selected Asia countries (excluding China) increased 2.2% ($6.6 million) to $313.8 million. Japan up $5.5 million to $77.6 million; South Korea up $14.4 million to $92.8 million; Hong Kong up $1.7 million to $60.2 million; Singapore up $11.5 million to $29.8 million; India down $0.02 million to $23.7 million; ;Taiwan down $7.5 million to $11.2 million; Indonesia down $19.0 million to $18.4 million. Other Major Asian share of total Nova Scotia exports was 6.8%.
Year-to-date export trade to selected Europe countries increased 4.9% ($15.0 million) to $323.0 million. United Kingdom up $6.9 million to $68.7 million; Germany up $10.6 million to $43.0 million; Italy up $0.6 million to $13.7 million; France up $11.3 million to $68.6 million; Belgium up $4.7 million to $35.2 million; Spain down $4.4 million to $36.7 million; Netherlands down $14.7 million to $57.1 million. Major European countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 7.0%
Year-to-date export trade to selected Other countries decreased 13.1% ($52.4 million) to $345.9 million. Brazil up $1.7 million to $11.2 million; Iraq up $0.5 million to $4.0 million; Norway up $1.9 million to $15.1 million; Russian Federation up $0.1 million to $3.1 million; Switzerland up $1.3 million to $6.1 million; Algeria down $0.9 million to $0.02 million; Australia down $19.4 million to $15.7 million; Mexico down $5.9 million to $49.5 million; Peru down $0.3 million to $0.6 million; Saudi Arabia down $1.4 million to $0.8 million; Turkey down $11.5 million to $5.3 million; Residual down $18.5 million to $234.7 million. Other countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 7.5%.
