NOVA SCOTIA
Month-over-month
In Nova Scotia September 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 1.1% to $781.3 million over August 2019 and increased 9.3% over September 2018.
Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments. Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.4 million in January 2014 to $513.3 million in September 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $170.1 million in January 2014 to $267.9 million in September 2019.
Year-to-date
In Nova Scotia Jan-Sep 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 5.3% ($351.2 million) to $7.0 billion. Non-durable goods industries, accounting for 69% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 3.7% ($171.7 million) to $4.8 billion. Durable goods industries, accounting for 31% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 8.9% ($179.5 million) to $2.2 billion.
CANADA
In Canada September 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.2% to $57.4 billion over August 2019 and decreased 1.2% over September 2018.
Compared to August 2019, overall sales decreased in 10 of 21 industries representing 62.2% of all manufacturing sectors. Durable goods increased 0.4% to $30.7 billion over Aug 2019 and increased 2.0% over September 2018. Non-durable goods decreased 1.0% to $26.7 billion over Aug 2019 and decreased 4.6% over September 2018.
Inventory to sales ratio fell to 1.53 in September. Unfilled orders decreased 0.6% to $97.4 billion. Unfilled orders were down in the aerospace product and parts industry as well as in computer and electronic products industry. New orders fell 2.7% to $56.8 billion over August 2019.
PROVINCES
On a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 3 provinces in September 2019 over August 2019. New Brunswick had the largest growth at 9.9% Prince Edward Island shipment growth decreased 6.7% Nova Scotia shipments decreased 1.1%. In Canada shipments decreased 0.2%.
On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 6 provinces in September 2019 over September 2018. Nova Scotia had the largest growth at 9.3%. Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 11.1%. Nova Scotia shipments increased 9.3%. In Canada shipments decreased 1.2%.
On a seasonally adjusted, year-to-date basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 7 provinces in Jan-Sep 2019. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 19.5%. New Brunswick shipment growth decreased 13.0%. Nova Scotia shipments increased 5.3%. In Canada shipments increased 0.9%.
NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS
Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Sep 2019), Manufacturing Shipments increased 5.2% ($343.2 million) over the same period last year.
- Non-durable goods shipments, accounting for 69% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 3.6% ($165.4 million),
- Food manufacturing with a 28% share increased 2.5% ($47.1 million).
- Plastics & rubber products with a 23% share increased 7.3% ($111.0 million).
- Other non-durables with a 17% share increased 0.6% ($7.3 million).
- Durable goods industries with a 31% share increased 8.8% ($177.9 million).
- Wood product manufacturing with a 4% share decreased 10.5% ($36.3 million).
- Fabricated metal Prod with a 4% share increased 8.1% ($18.9 million).
- Machinery manufacturing with a 3% share increased 20.4% ($30.8 million).
- Other durables with a 21% share increased 12.8% ($164.5 million).
CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREAS (CMA) SECTORS
HALIFAX CMA
In Halifax, unadjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $52.2 million in January 2014 to $88.6 million in September 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $74.5 million in January 2014 to $142.7 million in September 2019.
In Halifax, year-to-date unadjusted non-durable shipments have risen 3.9% ($28.4 million) in Jan-Sep 2019 to $759.2 million over Jan-Sep 2018. Durable shipments have increased 14.6% ($143.9 million) to $1.1 billion. Manufacturing shipments increased 10.1% ($172.3 million) to $1.9 billion.
THE REST OF NOVA SCOTIA
In the rest of Nova Scotia, unadjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $303.1 million in January 2014 to $426.8 million in September 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $74.3 million in January 2014 to $132.9 million in September 2019.
In the rest of Nova Scotia, year-to-date unadjusted non-durable shipments have risen 3.5% ($137.0 million) in Jan-Sep 2019 to $4.0 billion over Jan-Sep 2018. Durable shipments have increased 3.3% ($34.0 million) to $1.1 billion. Manufacturing shipments increased 3.5% ($171.0 million) to $5.1 billion.
