US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, NOVEMBER 2019

BUILDING PERMITS

US residential building permits increased 1.4 per cent in November compared to the revised October estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,482,000. This is 11.1 per cent above the November 2018 estimate of 1,334,000.

Year over year (Nov-19 vs Nov-18), permits for single unit structures increased 8.9 per cent. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 16.4 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units decreased 2.4 per cent over November 2018.

In the first 11 months of 2019, building permits are up 1.2 per cent. Permits are down for single unit structures (1.5 per cent), up for structures with 2 to 4 units (2.3 per cent), and up for structures with 5 units or more (6.4 per cent). 

HOUSING STARTS

US housing starts increased 3.2 per cent in November compared to the revised October estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,365,000.This is 13.6 per cent above the November 2018 estimate of 1,202,000.

Year over year (Nov-19 vs Nov-18), starts for single unit structures increased 16.7 per cent, and starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 4.4 per cent.

Year-to-date (Jan-November 2019), housing starts are up 0.6 per cent with increases in starts for single unit structures (0.1 per cent), and increases in starts for structures with 5 or more units (2.1 per cent).
