LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - JANUARY 2020

In Nova Scotia January 2020, (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 0.2 per cent (900) from December 2019 to 504,500 and increased 1.1 per cent (5,300) over January 2019
  • Employment increased 0.4 per cent (1,700) from December 2019 to 467,300 and increased 0.4 per cent (1,700) over January 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 6.3 per cent (2,500) from December 2019 to 37,200 and increased 10.7 per cent (3,600) over January 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.5 percentage points from December 2019 to 7.4 per cent.

In Canada January 2020, (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.1 per cent (15,800) from December 2019 to 20,283,500 and increased 1.1 per cent (229,700) over January 2019
  • Employment increased 0.2 per cent (34,500) from December 2019 to 19,159,100 and increased 1.4 per cent (267,700) over January 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 1.6 per cent (18,800) from December 2019 to 1,124,400 and decreased 3.3 per cent (38,000) over January 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.1 percentage points from December 2019 to 5.5 per cent. 

In Halifax January 2020, (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.1 per cent (300) from December 2019 to 256,900 and increased 2.6 per cent (6,400) over January 2019
  • Employment increased 0.3 per cent (700) from December 2019 to 240,400 and increased 1.0 per cent (2,400) over January 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 3.0 per cent (500) from December 2019 to 16,400 and increased 31.2 per cent (3,900) over January 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.2 percentage points from December 2019 to 6.4 per cent

 

 

STATISTICS CANADA QUOTES

"Three provinces saw notable change in the unemployment rate in January. The rate declined in Nova Scotia (down 0.5 percentage points to 7.4%) and in British Columbia (down 0.3 percentage points to 4.5%), as there were fewer people searching for work in these two provinces."
