US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, JANUARY 2020

BUILDING PERMITS

US residential building permits increased 9.2 per cent in Jan-20 compared to the revised Dec-19 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,551,000. This is 17.9 per cent above the estimate of 1,316,000.

Year over year (Jan-19 vs Jan-20), permits for single unit structures increased 20.2 per cent. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 16.0 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units decreased 6.7 per cent over Jan-19.

 

HOUSING STARTS

US housing starts decreased 3.6 per cent in Jan-2020compared to the revised Dec-19estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,567,000. This is 21.4 per cent above the Jan 2019 estimate of 1,291,000.

Year over year (Jan-19 vs Jan-20), starts for single unit structures increased 4.6 per cent, and starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 77.6 per cent.

Year-to-date (Jan 2020), housing starts are up 40.7 per cent with increases in starts for single unit structures (32.0 per cent), and increases in starts for structures with 5 or more units (65.3 per cent).
