EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 0.7 per cent in January 2020 over December 2019. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 0.7 per cent in January 2020.

 In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.1 per cent in Jan 2020 vs Jan 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were down 2.7 per cent in Jan 2020 vs Jan 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union Jan 2020 vs Jan 2019, where data is available,  the strongest growth in  year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Romania (13.1%)
  • Hungary (12.6%)
  • Lithuania (9.6%)
  • Poland (8.0%)
  • Bulgaria (6.5%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Belgium (-0.6%)
  • Slovakia (1.2%)
  • Denmark (1.9%)
  • United Kingdom (2.1%)

By retail sector,

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan 2020 vs Jan 2019 is found in

  • Automotive fuel (6.2%) followed by
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (2.4%), and
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.2%)
  • Hardware, appliances (1.4%).

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan 2020 vs Jan 2019 is found in

  • Automotive fuel (5.8%) followed by
  • Computers, telecommunications (2.8%), and
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.6%)
  • Hardware, appliances (2.4%)
  • Clothing, footwear (1.8%).

The lowest growth was in Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (0.7%).

Mail and internet sales were up 8.0% in the Euro Area, and  up 9.2% in the European Union.
