NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE JANUARY 2020

Year-to-Date (Jan-Nov 2019 vs. Jan-Nov 2018, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan 2020, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports decreased 3.8% ($18.1 million) over Jan 2019, to $0.5 billion.

 

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan 2020 with the same period last year, the largest dollar value increases were in Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($21.1 million), Consumer Goods ($5.1 million), Metal/Ores ($4.2 million).  The largest dollar value decreases were in Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials ($27.6 million), Motor vehicles/Parts ($11.1 million), and Chemical, plastic, rubber ($8.2 million).

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in

  • Energy by 456.4% ($3.0 million)
  • Transportation Equipment by 90% ($4.0 million)
  • Metal/Ores by 72.2% ($4.2 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 18% ($21.1 million)
  • Consumer Goods by 5.5% ($5.1 million)
  • Special Transactions by 5% ($0.2 million)

And export values decreased in

  • Motor vehicles/Parts by 10.4% (-$11.1 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products by 18.1% (-$3.1 million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 28.2% (-$8.2 million)
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 37.9% (-$27.6 million)
  • Machinery/Equipment by 38.9% (-$5.7 million)
  • Electronics by 0.4% (-$0.04 million)

YTD by Province

In 2020, New Brunswick reported the highest increase (19.1%), while British Columbia reported the highest decline (15.1%) in merchandise trade exports over 2019. Nova Scotia reported a 3.8% loss in merchandise trade exports. Canada reported a 2.7% gain in merchandise trade exports over 2019.

Excluding energy exports, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (13.8%) while British Columbia reported the highest decline (14.7%) in Non-energy exports over 2019. Nova Scotia reported a 4.4% loss in Non-energy exports. Canada reported a 3.2% loss in Non-energy exports over 2019.

In Nova Scotia January 2020, international export trade by product decreased 3.8% to $457.6 million over January 2019. 

  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food increased 18.0% ($21.1 million) to $138.6 million (30% share)
  • Consumer Goods increased 5.5% ($5.1 million) to $96.2 million (21% share),
  • Metal/Ores increased 72.2% ($4.2 million) to $9.9 million (2% share),
  • Transportation Equipment increased 90.0% ($4.0 million) to $8.5 million (2% share),
  • Special Transactions increased 5.0% ($0.2 million) to $4.9 million (1% share), and,
  • Energy increased 456.4% ($3.0 million) to $3.7 million (1.0% share),
  • Motor vehicles/Parts decreased 10.4% (-$11.1 million) to $95.6 million (21 % share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials decreased 37.9% (-$27.6 million)  to $45.3 million (10% share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber decreased 28.2% (-$8.2 million)  to $20.9 million (5% share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products decreased 18.1% (-$3.1 million) to $14.0 million (3% share),
  • Electronics decreased 3.0% (-$0.04 million)  to $11.0 million (2% share),
  • Machinery/Equipment decreased 38.9% (-$5.7 million) to $8.9 million (2% share),

 

By Trading Partner

 

 

In Jan 2020,  export trade to all countries declined 3.8% (-$18.0 million) to $457.6 million. The United States decreased 11.9% (-$36.5 million) to $269.6 million. Mexico decreased 21.8% (-$1.2 million) to $4.3 million.

 

 

 

 Jan 2020 export trade to selected Asia partners  increased 19.6% ($22.2 million) to $135.3 million.  China was up 28.1% ($25.7 million) to $117.3 million, Hong Kong was up 39.3% ($0.4 million) to $1.6 million,  Indonesia was up 30.7% ($0.2 million) to $0.6 million. Taiwan was down 23.4% (-$0.3 million) to $0.9 million;  Singapore down 92.0% ($2.7 million) to $0.2 million; Japan down 5.3% ($0.3 million) to $5.0 million and South Korea down 8.6% ($0.7 million) to $7.5 million.

 

Jan 2020 export trade to selected European partners  decreased 12.5% (-$3.6 million) to $25.0 million. France up 23.5% ($0.8 million) to $4.3 million,  Netherlands up 18.8% ($0.8 million) to $5.3 million,  Belgium up 1.4% ($0.03 million) to $2.5 million,  Norway up 151.7% ($1.3 million) to $2.1 million, United Kingdom down 40.7% (-$2.9 million) to $4.2 million, Germany down 22.8% (-$1.5 million) to $4.9 million, Italy down 31.3% (-$0.4 million) to $0.8 million, Spain down 47.2% (-$1.3 million) to $0.8 million, Switzerland down 89.3% (-$1.0 million) to $0.1 million, and Russian Federation down 95.7% (-$22.0 million) to $1.0 million

Year-to-date export trade to Other countries increased 4.5 per cent ($1.1 million) to $23.3 million. 

Brazil up 46.4% ($0.3 million) to $1.0 million' Peru up 271.4% ($0.1 million) to $0.1 million, Turkey up 2171.4% ($0.3 million) to $0.3 million, Residual up 8.3% ($1.6 million) to $20.7million, Algeria virtually unchanged  (-$0.02 million) to nil, Australia down 23.9% (-$0.3 million) to $1.1 million, Iraq down 86.7% (-$0.8 million) to $0.1 million and Saudi Arabia down 98.3% (-$0.1 million) to $0.002 million.
