RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2020

In Nova Scotia January 2020, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 2.1 per cent over December 2019 to $1.4 billion. For Jan 2020 to Jan 2019, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 2.0 per cent.

Nationally, January 2020, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 0.4 per cent over December 2019 to $52.0 billion. For Jan 2020 to Jan 2019, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 3.4 per cent.

Canada and the Provinces

On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 0.4 per cent nationally. Eight provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with New Brunswick (3.3 per cent) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (2.1 per cent) over the previous month. Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline.

 

On a year over year basis, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 3.4 per cent nationally. Nine provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with New Brunswick (7.7 per cent) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (2.0 per cent) over the same month last year. British Columbia reported the only decline (0.4 per cent).

Nova Scotia Sectors 

In January 2020, Unadjusted  Retail Trade increased 3.4 per cent ($38.2 million) to  $1,174.8 million over January 2019.

Sector increases:

  • Motor Vehicle with a 27% share of Retail Trade increased 3.1 per cent ($9.3 million).
  • Furniture with a 3% share increased 4.5 per cent ($1.3 million).
  • Building Material with a 6% share increased 2.7 per cent ($1.9 million).
  • Health with a 9% share increased 3.5 per cent ($3.5 million).
  • Gas Stations with a 13% share increased 10.4 per cent ($14.9 million).
  • Clothing with a 3% share increased 0.9 per cent ($0.3 million).
  • General Merchandise with a 11% share increased 4.7 per cent ($5.6 million).
  • Miscellaneous Stores with a 3% share increased 28.3 per cent ($7.0 million).

Sector decreases:

  • Electronics with a 1% share decreased 7.3 per cent ($0.9 million).
  • Food & Beverage with a 24% share decreased 1.1 per cent ($3.2 million).
  • Sporting & Hobbies with a 1% share decreased 9.4 per cent ($1.7 million).

 

 

 

 Cannabis stores

In Nova Scotia, Jan-20, on a year-to-date basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales reached $6.3 million. This represents a 4.1% share of the Canadian market.

In Canada, Jan-20, on a year-to-date basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales reached $154.2 million.

E-Commerce

In Canada January 2020,

  • on a month-over-month basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales decreased 39.8 per cent over December 2019 to $1.7 billion, representing a 3.8% share of total retail trade. 
  • On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales increased 9.8 per cent over January 2019.
