Nova Scotia January 2020, on a seasonally adjusted basis
- month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 7.2 per cent to $962.0 million over December 2019.
- year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 10.0 per cent over January 2019.
Canada January 2020, on a seasonally adjusted basis
- month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 1.8 per cent to $65.2 billion over December 2019.
- year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 3.2 per cent over January 2019.
BY PROVINCE
On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted Wholesale Trade was up 1.8 per cent nationally. Nationally, wholesale increased for second consecutive month with all sector reporting higher sales. Nationally, gains were concentrated in the motor vehicle and parts, and miscellaneous subsectors.
Seven provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with Prince Edward Island (+8.6 per cent) reporting the largest gain in percentage terms. Nova Scotia reported an increase (7.2 per cent) over the previous month. Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline (-7.3 per cent) over the previous month.
On a year-over-year basis, seasonally adjusted Wholesale Trade was up 3.2 per cent nationally. Six provinces reported year-over-year increases in wholesale trade, with Prince Edward Island (+26.0 per cent) reporting the largest gain in percentage terms. Nova Scotia reported an increase (+10.0 per cent) over the previous year. Compared to January 2019 Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline (-11.2 per cent).
Canada Inventories
Wholesale inventories in Canada were up 0.1 per cent to $92.1 billion in January, and have been mostly flat over past six months. For the month higher inventories in five subsectors, including personal and household goods and motor vehicles and parts, were almost offset with lower inventories in miscellaneous and machinery, equipment and supplies.
NOVA SCOTIA BY SECTOR YEAR-TO-DATE (JANUARY 2020 VS. JANUARY 2019)
In Nova Scotia for January 2020, total wholesale trade seasonally adjusted was $962.0 million.
Comparing Jan-20 to Jan 2019, the following sectors wholesale trade increased
- Food, beverage with a 37% share of Wholesale Trade increased 26.3 per cent (+$74.4 million).
- Motor vehicle and parts with a 18% share increased 17.6 per cent (+$26.3 million).
- Building material with a 18% share increased 0.8 per cent (+$1.3 million).
- Miscellaneous wholesalers with a 7% share increased 4.7 per cent (+$2.9 million).
In the following sectors wholesale trade decreased
- Machinery, equipment with a 15% share decreased 10.8 per cent (-$17.6 million).
