UK RETAIL SALES, FEBRUARY 2020

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales decreased in February 2020.

  • Month over month retail sales values decreased 0.5 per cent while the retail sales volume (adjusted for price changes) decreased 0.3 per cent over January 2020.
  • Year-over-year retail sales values increased 0.7 per cent and retail sales volumes increased 0.05 per cent over February 2019.
  • Year-to-date retail sales values increased 1.4 per cent and retail sales volumes increased 0.5 per cent over Jan-Feb 2019.

 

Internet sales

  • Year-over-year Internet Sales increased by 5.0 per cent over February 2019.
  • Online sales share of all retail sales increased to 19.6 per cent. 

The Office for National Statistics noted that the data collection for February retail sales was completed by February 29 and is largely unaffected by recent developments from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Office for National Statistics is working to continue its provision of vital information about the impacts of COVID-19 on the UK economy and society.  However, the urgency to gather information and the challenges from large changes in the economy could affect the volume, quality and accuracy of data available.
