EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, FEBRUARY 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were up 0.8 per cent in February 2020 over January 2020. In the Euro Area, retail sales were  up 0.9 per cent in February 2020.

 In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were up 2.8 per cent in Jan-Feb 2020 vs Jan-Feb 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were  up 2.4 per cent in Jan-Feb 2020 vs Jan-Feb 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union Jan-Feb 2020 vs Jan-Feb 2019, where data is available,  the strongest growth in  year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Romania (10.1%)
  • Hungary (7.8%)
  • Portugal (6.0%)
  • Lithuania (5.7%)
  • Estonia (5.6%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Slovenia (-3.0%)
  • Slovakia (1.2%)
  • Denmark (1.3%)
  • Sweden (1.6%)

By retail sector,

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Feb 2020 vs Jan-Feb 2019  is found in

  • Automotive fuel (4.8%) followed by 
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (3.8%), and 
  • Hardware, appliances (3.3%). 
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (3.2%). 
  • Computers, telecommunications (2.2%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (-0.3%).

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Feb 2020 vs Jan-Feb 2019  is found in

  • Automotive fuel (4.8%) followed by
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (4.3%), and
  • Hardware, appliances (4.3%).
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (3.6%).
  • Computers, telecommunications (2.3%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (0.7%).

 

Mail and internet sales were up 9.5% in the Euro Area. Mail and internet sales were up 10.3% in the European Union.
