April 16, 2020MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, FEBRUARY 2020 RAIL BLOCADES AND COVID-19 DAMPEN SALES
"At the national level, the impact of the rail blockades and COVID-19 disruptions in February lowered total manufacturing sales (seasonally adjusted) by an estimated $465 million (-0.8%), according to respondents. Without these disruptions, total manufacturing sales would have risen by an estimated 1.3% in February compared with the figure in January." Statistics Canada
CANADA
In Canada February 2020, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 0.5% to $56.2 billion over January 2020 and decreased 0.9% over February 2019.
Compared to January 2020, overall sales decreased in 10 of 21 industries representing 41.6% of all manufacturing sectors. Durable goods increased 1.1% to $29.4 billion over Jan 2020 and decreased 1.7% over February 2019. Non-durable goods decreased 0.1% to $26.8 billion over Jan 2020 and increased 0.1% over February 2019.
Inventory to sales ratio decreased to 1.55 in February 2020. Unfilled orders were unchanged at $97.5 billion. Unfilled orders were up in 10 of 21 industries with the largest in Transportation equipuipment and Fabricated metals product industries. Gains were partially offset by declines in Primary metal industry and Machinery industry. New orders decreased 0.5% to $56.2 billion over January 2020, as a result of lower orders in Machinery and aerospace product and parts industries.
PROVINCES
On a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 4 provinces in February 2020 over January 2020. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 8.5%; New Brunswick shipment growth decreased 8.9%; Nova Scotia shipments decreased 3.3%. In Canada shipments increased 0.5%.
On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 4 provinces in February 2020 over February 2019. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 22.0%; Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 6.9%; Nova Scotia shipments decreased 0.2%. In Canada shipments decreased 0.9%.
On a seasonally adjusted, year-to-date basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 4 provinces in Jan-Feb 2020. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 21.8%; Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 12.7%; Nova Scotia shipments decreased 2.0%. In Canada shipments decreased 1.2%.

In Nova Scotia February 2020, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 3.3% to $733.5 million over January 2020 and decreased 0.2% over February 2019.
Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments.
Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.2 million in January 2014 to $496.9 million in February 2020. Durable shipments have increased from $191.9 million in January 2014 to $236.7 million in February 2020.

Unadjusted year-over-year (Feb 2020 vs Feb 2019), Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.4% ($2.6 million).
- Non-durable goods shipments, accounting for 67% of Manufacturing Shipments , decreased 4.0% (-$17.8 million).
- Plastics & rubber products with a 25% decreased 1.3% (-$2.2 million).
- Other non-durables with a 42% decreased 5.6% (-$15.6 million).
- Durable goods industries with a 33% increased 7.9% ($15.2 million).
- Wood product manufacturing with a 4% decreased 18.4% (-$6.2 million).
- Fabricated metal Prod with a 3% decreased 10.2% (-$2.3 million).
- Machinery manufacturing with a 2% decreased 29.2% (-$6.2 million).
- Other durables with a 23% increased 26.2% ($30.0 million).

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2020), Manufacturing Shipments decreased 1.7% ($23.0 million) over the same period last year.
- Non-durable goods shipments , accounting for 67% of Manufacturing Shipments , decreased 5.0% ($46.7 million),
- Plastics & rubber products with a 24% share decreased 5.6% (-$18.8 million).
- Other non-durables with a 43% share decreased 4.6% (-$27.9 million).
- Durable goods industries with a 33% share increased 5.7% ($23.7 million).
- Wood product manufacturing with a 5% share decreased 11.5% (-$7.9 million).
- Fabricated metal Prod with a 3% share decreased 8.6% (-$4.0 million).
- Machinery manufacturing with a 3% share decreased 13.1% (-$5.1 million).
- Other durables with a 23% share increased 15.6% ($40.7 million).
CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREAS (CMA) SECTORS
HALIFAX CMA
In Halifax, month-to-month/year-over-year, unadjusted manufacturing shipments have declined 10.4% to $178.9 million over January 2020 and Increased 1.3% over February 2019. Non-durable shipments have declined 5.5% to $68.9 million over January 2020 and declined 1.0% over February 2019. Durable shipments have declined 13.2% to $110.0million over January 2020 and Increased 2.8% over February 2006.
In Halifax, year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2020),unadjusted manufacturing shipments have increased 3.2% to $0.4 billion over Jan-Feb 2019. Non-durable manufacturing shipments increased 0.8% to $141.8 million. Durable manufacturing shipments increased 4.7% to $0.2 billion.
THE REST OF NOVA SCOTIA
In the rest of Nova Scotia, month-to-month/year-over-year, unadjusted manufacturing shipments have declined 8.3% to $452.8 million over January 2020 and declined 1.1% over February 2019. Non-durable shipments have declined 9.1% to $355.3 million over January 2020 and declined 4.6% over February 2019. Durable shipments have declined 5.3% to $97.5million over January 2020 and Increased 14.3% over February 2019.
In the rest of Nova Scotia, year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2020), unadjusted manufacturing shipments have declined 3.5% to $0.9 billion over Jan-Feb 2019. Non-durable manufacturing shipments declined 6.0% to $0.7 billion. Durable manufacturing shipments increased 7.0% to $0.2 billion.
