US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, MARCH 2020

BUILDING PERMITS

US residential building permits decreased 6.8 per cent in Mar-20 compared to the revised Feb-20 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,353,000. This is 5.0 per cent above the estimate of 1,288,000. Single unit structures decreased 12.0 per cent in Mar-20 compared to the revised Feb-20 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 884,000. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 5.2 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 2.2 per cent over Feb-20.

Year over year (Mar-19 vs Mar-20), permits for single unit structures increased 8.7 per cent. Permits for structures with 5 units or more decreased 3.6 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 27.8 per cent over Mar-19.

 

HOUSING STARTS

US housing starts decreased 22.3 per cent in Mar-2020 compared to the revised Feb-20 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,216,000. This is 1.4 per cent above the Mar 2019 estimate of 1,199,000. Starts for single unit structures decreased 17.5 per cent in Mar-2020 compared to the revised Feb-20 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 856,000. Starts for structures with 5 or more units decreased 32.1 per cent in Mar-2020 compared to the revised Feb-20 estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 347,000.

Year over year (Mar-19 vs Mar-20), starts for single unit structures increased 2.8 per cent, and starts for structures with 5 or more units decreased 3.9 per cent.
