US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, MARCH 2020

In March 2020, US construction spending (seasonally adjusted annual rate) increased 0.9 per cent to $1,361 billion. Total Residential construction increased 2.3 per cent to $558 billion and Non-residential construction spending decreased 0.1 per cent to $803 billion.

Year-over-year, spending is 4.7 per cent above March 2019.

Private sector construction increased 0.7 per cent to $1,013 billion and is up 3.7 per cent over March 2019.

  • Private residential construction increased 2.3 per cent to $550 billion and is up 8.8 per cent over March 2019.
  • Private non-residential construction spending decreased 1.3 per cent to $463 billion and decreased 1.8 per cent over March 2019.

Public sector construction increased 1.6 per cent to $348 billion and is up 7.9 per cent over March 2019.

  • Public residential construction increased 0.7 per cent to $7.6 billion and is up 24.6 per cent over March 2019.
  • Public non-residential construction spending increased 1.6 per cent to $340 billion, and up 7.6 per cent over March 2019.

Year-to-date (January-March 2020 vs. January-March 2019), US construction spending is up 5.7 per cent over January-March 2019.

  • Private sector construction is up 4.6 per cent.
  • Public sector construction is up 9.3 per cent.
  • Total Residential construction is up 8.8 per cent.
  • Total Non-residential construction is up 3.7 per cent.
