EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, MARCH 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were down 10.4 per cent in March 2020 over February 2020. In the Euro Area, retail sales were  down 11.2 per cent in March 2020.

In the European Union, on a year-over-year basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were down 8.3 per cent in Mar 2020 vs Mar 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were  down 9.2 per cent in Mar 2020 vs Mar 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union Mar 2020 vs Mar 2019, where data is available,  the strongest growth in  year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Hungary (6.0%)
  • Romania (4.1%)
  • Estonia (2.9%)
  • Ireland (2.9%)
  • Malta (1.3%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • France (-15.9%)
  • Slovenia (-15.0%)
  • Bulgaria (-14.6%)
  • Spain (-13.0%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Mar 2020 vs Mar 2019  is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (10.1%) followed by
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (4.2%), and
  • Hardware, appliances (-15.3%).
  • Computers, telecommunications (-16.5%).
  • Automotive fuel (-24.2%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (-40.7%).

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Mar 2020 vs Mar 2019  is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (10.1%) followed by
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (5.6%), and
  • Hardware, appliances (-13.4%).
  • Computers, telecommunications (-16.0%).
  • Automotive fuel (-23.4%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (-40.6%)

 

Mail and internet sales were up 11.1% in the Euro Area.  Mail and internet sales were up 11.6% in the European Union.
