EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, APRIL 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were down 11.1 per cent in April 2020 over March 2020. In the Euro Area, retail sales were  down 11.7 per cent in April 2020.

In the European Union, on a year-over-year basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value)  were down 18.2 per cent in Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were  down 19.8 per cent in Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019, where data is available,  the lowest decline in year-over-year retail sales occurred in:

  • Finland (-0.5%)
  • Denmark (-2.9%)
  • Sweden (-3.3%)
  • Netherlands (-5.8%)

The largest declines occurred in

  • France (-31.9%)
  • Spain (-29.7%)
  • Luxembourg (-24.7%)
  • Malta (-24.5%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strong growth in Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019  is only found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (4.8%)

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-65.0%)
  • Automotive fuel (-53.3%)

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strong growth in Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019  is only found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (4.1%) 

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-64.2%)
  • Automotive fuel (-50.5%)

 

Mail and internet sales were up 20.0% in the Euro Area.  Mail and internet sales were up 23.2% in the European Union.
