NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, MARCH AND APRIL 2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, comparisons of year-to-date averages and sums do not show Nova Scotia’s rapidly changing economic situation.  The DailyStats will focus on year-over-year comparisons, comparing one month with the same month in the prior year.  Where possible the DailyStats will make comparisons of seasonally adjusted data from the pre-COVID-19 period (January  and February 2020) with the period during which COVID-19 measures were in place from March 2020 onwards.

 

YEAR-OVER-YEAR (Apr20 vs Apr19)

In Nova Scotia April 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales decreased 67.1% over April 2019. The 1,623 new motor vehicles sold in April 2020 represent a sales value of $68.8 million,  down 63.7% over April 2019.

In Canada April 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales decreased -74.6% over April 2019.  The 47,168 new motor vehicles sold in April 2020 represent a sales value of $2.28 billion,  down 71.7% over April 2019.

 

YEAR-OVER-YEAR (Mar20 vs Mar19)

 

In Nova Scotia March 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales decreased 54.0% over March 2019. The 2,164 new motor vehicles sold in March 2020 represent a sales value of $87.8 million,  down 50.8% over April 2019.

In Canada March 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales decreased -48.5% over March 2019. The 96,147 new motor vehicles sold in March 2020 represent a sales value of $4.47 billion, down 44.6% over March 2019.

 

Average Prices

In Nova Scotia Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019,  the new motor vehicles average price increased 10.4% to $40,133. The passenger car average price increased 4.2% to $28,426 while the truck/SUV average price increased 7.5% to $45,751.

In Canada Apr 2020 vs Apr 2019,  the average price of new motor vehicles increased 11.1% to $48,296.

In Nova Scotia Jan-Apr 2020, unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (75.3% share) decreased 39.4% over Jan-Apr 2019.

North American manufactured new motor vehicles Sales Value (78.4% share) decreased 34.9% over Jan-Apr 2019.

Nova Scotia's unit sales of New Motor Vehicles manufactured overseas (24.7% share) decreased 37.1% over Jan-Apr 2019. The sales value of New Motor Vehicles manufactured overseas (21.6% share) decreased 35.0% over Jan-Apr 2019.

 

Passenger Cars and Trucks

In Nova Scotia Jan-Apr 2020, passenger car Unit Sales (22.4% share) decreased 52.3% to 2,101 units over Jan-Apr 2019, and passenger car Sales Value (15.9% share) decreased 50.9% to $60 million.

In Nova Scotia Jan-Apr 2020, truck/SUV Unit Sales (77.6% share) decreased 33.4% to 7,258 units over Jan-Apr 2019, and truck/SUV Sales Value (84.1% share) decreased 30.6% to $316 million.
