July 02, 2020US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, MAY 2020 COVID-19 Impact: Due to recent events surrounding COVID-19, many governments and businesses are operating on a limited capacity or have ceased operations completely. The Census Bureau has monitored response and data quality and determined estimates in this release meet publication standards.
In May 2020, US construction spending (seasonally adjusted annual rate) decreased 2.1 per cent to $1,356.4 billion. Year-over-year, US construction spending is 0.3 per cent above May 2019 estimate of $1,353 billion.
Total Residential construction spending decreased 3.9 per cent to $544 billion and total non-residential construction spending decreased 0.9 per cent to $813 billion.
Private sector construction decreased 3.3 per cent to $1,001 billion and was down 1.2 per cent over May 2019.
- Private residential construction decreased 4.0 per cent to $536 billion and was up 0.7 per cent over May 2019.
- Private non-residential construction spending decreased 2.4 per cent to $465 billion and was down 3.4 per cent over May 2019.
Public sector construction increased 1.2 cent to $355 billion and was up 4.7 per cent over May 2019.
- Public residential construction increased 3.6 per cent to $8.0 billion and was up 34.4 per cent over May 2019.
- Public non-residential construction spending increased 1.2 per cent to $347 billion, and was up 4.2 per cent over May 2019.
