FARM PRODUCT PRICES, MAY 2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, comparisons of year-to-date averages and sums do not show Nova Scotia’s rapidly changing economic situation.  The DailyStats will focus on year-over-year comparisons, comparing one month with the same month in the prior year.  Where possible the DailyStats will make comparisons of seasonally adjusted data from the pre-COVID-19 period (January and February 2020) with the period during which COVID-19 measures were in place from March 2020 onwards.

 

Nova Scotia Month-over-Month Sectors

In May 2020 vs Apr 2020, Nova Scotia Farm Product Prices for:

  • Wheat (except durum wheat) increased 3.6% ($9.30 per metric tonne) to $264.97 per metric tonne 
  • Cattle for slaughter increased 9.4% ($9.10 per hundredweight) to $105.98 per hundredweight
  • Chickens for meat increased 1.3% ($0.03 per kilogram) to $2.30 per kilogram
  • Unprocessed milk from bovine decreased 11.3% (-$96.51 per kilolitre) to $756.84 per kilolitre
  • Eggs in shell was unchanged at $1.79 per dozen

 

Nova Scotia Year-over-Year Sectors 

In May 2020 to May 2019, Nova Scotia Farm Product Prices (Year-over-year) for:

  • Wheat (except durum wheat) increased 13.7% ($31.91 per metric tonne) to $264.97 per metric tonne
  • Oats increased 10.7% ($22.46 per metric tonne) to $231.50 per metric tonne
  • Barley increased 2.5% ($5.62 per metric tonne) to $227.71 per metric tonne
  • Corn for grain increased 0.7% ($1.72 per metric tonne) to $238.72 per metric tonne
  • Cattle for slaughter increased 3.9% ($3.99 per hundredweight) to $105.98 per hundredweight
  • Cattle for feeding increased 29.0% ($39.62 per hundredweight) to $176.22 per hundredweight
  • Calves for feeding increased 22.0% ($33.01 per hundredweight) to $183.25 per hundredweight
  • Hogs decreased 26.3% (-$26.93 per kilogram) to $75.47 per hundredweight
  • Chickens for meat increased 6.0% ($0.13 per kilogram) to $2.30 per kilogram
  • Turkeys for meat increased 3.0% ($0.07 per kilogram) to $2.41 per kilogram
  • Unprocessed milk from bovine increased 7.9% ($55.53 per kilolitre) to $756.84 per kilolitre
  • Eggs in shell decreased 0.6% (-$0.01 per dozen) to $1.79 per dozen
