NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, MAY 2020

YEAR-OVER-YEAR (May20 vs May19)

In May 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales in Nova Scotia declined 54.4 per cent over May 2019. The 2,584 new motor vehicles sold in May 2020 represent a sales value of $107.3 million, down 49.7 per cent over May 2019.

In Canada May 2020, New Motor Vehicles Unit Sales decreased 47.2 per cent over May 2019. The 109,213 new motor vehicles sold in May 2020 represent a sales value of $4.9 billion, down 44.8 per cent over May 2019.

Average Prices

In Nova Scotia May 2020, the new motor vehicles average price increased 10.4 per cent over May 2019 to $41,541, the passenger car average price increased 14.3 per cent over May 2019 to $30,254, the truck/suv average price increased 7.1 per cent over May 2019 to $44,793.

In Canada May 2020, the new motor vehicles average price increased 4.4 per cent over May 2019 to $44,639.

In Nova Scotia Jan-May 2020, unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (74.6% share) decreased 44.0 per cent over Jan-May 2019.

North American manufactured new motor vehicles Sales Value (77.9% share) decreased 39.1 per cent over Jan-May 2019.

Nova Scotia's unit sales of New Motor Vehicles manufactured overseas (25.4% share) decreased 40.2 per cent over Jan-May 2019. The sales value of New Motor Vehicles manufactured overseas (22.1% share) decreased 38.1 per cent over Jan-May 2019.

Passenger Cars and Trucks

In Nova Scotia Jan-May 2020, passenger car Unit Sales (22.4% share) decreased 56.5 per cent to 2,679 units over Jan-May 2019, and passenger car Sales Value (16.0% share) decreased 54.9 per cent to $77 million over Jan-May 2019.

In Nova Scotia Jan-May 2020, truck/SUV Unit Sales (77.6% share) decreased 37.5 per cent to 9,264 units over Jan-May 2019, and truck/SUV Sales Value (84.0% share) decreased 34.5 per cent to $406 million over Jan-May 2019.

 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, comparisons of year-to-date averages and sums do not show Nova Scotia’s rapidly changing economic situation.  The DailyStats will focus on year-over-year comparisons, comparing one month with the same month in the prior year.  Where possible the DailyStats will make comparisons of seasonally adjusted data from the pre-COVID-19 period (January and February 2020) with the period during which COVID-19 measures were in place from March 2020 onwards.
