US RETAIL SALES, JUNE 2020

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today the advance estimates of US retail and food service sales for June 2020. Due to COVID-19, many businesses are operating on a limited capacity or have ceased operations completely.

U.S. retail and food service sales for June 2020, was a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month 7.5 per cent increase ($36.6 billion) over May 2020 to $524.3 billion. Retail and food service sales for June were up 1.1 per cent over June 2019.

Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 6.4 per cent over May 2020, while food service and drinking place month-over-month receipts increased 20.0 per cent to $47.4 billion. 

Year-over-Year

In June 2020, United States seasonally adjusted Retail Trade & Food Services increased 1.1 per cent over June 2019. Retail trade excluding food services and drinking places increased 5.0 per cent, and food services and drinking places sales decreased 26.3 per cent. 

 

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Compared to the previous month, sales were up in 10 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in Clothing Stores (105.1%), Electronics (37.4%) and Furniture (32.5%). Declines were seen in Non-store Retailers (-2.4%), Food & Beverage (-1.2%) and Building Materials (-0.3%).

Retail trade, 91.0% of total retail trade & food services, increased 5.0% ($22.6 billion) to $477 billion.

  • Motor vehicle sector, 21.0% of total retail trade & food services, increased 7.5% ($7.6 billion).
  • Furniture stores, 1.8% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 3.5% ($0.4 billion).
  • Electronics stores, 1.3% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 12.7% ($1.0 billion).
  • Building materials, 7.0% of total retail trade & food services, increased 17.3% ($5.4 billion).
  • Food and beverage stores, 13.7% of total retail trade & food services, increased 12.4% ($7.9 billion).
  • Heath, personal care stores, 5.4% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 5.7% ($1.7 billion).
  • Gasoline Stations, 6.4% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 19.1% ($7.9 billion).
  • Clothing stores, 3.3% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 23.2% ($5.2 billion).
  • Sports and hobby stores, 1.6% of total retail trade & food services, increased 20.6% ($1.4 billion).
  • General merchandise stores, 11.6% of total retail trade & food services, increased 2.5% ($1.5 billion).
  • Miscellaneous retail, 2.0% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 7.7% ($0.9 billion).
  • Non-store retailers,15.8% of total retail trade & food services, increased 23.5% ($15.8 billion).

Food services, drinking places 9.0% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 26.3% ($16.9 billion).
