RETAIL TRADE, JUNE 2020

 

 In Nova Scotia June 2020, seasonally adjusted retail trade increased 23.4 per cent over May 2020 to $1.4 billion. In Jun 2020 vs Jun 2019, seasonally adjusted retail trade increased 4.1 per cent.

Nationally, June 2020, seasonally adjusted retail trade increased 23.7 per cent over May 2020 to $53.0 billion. In Jun 2020 vs Jun 2019, seasonally adjusted retail trade increased 3.8 per cent.

 

Canada and the Provinces

On a month over month basis, retail trade increased 23.7 per cent nationally. All provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Ontario (33.8 per cent)  reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (23.4 per cent) over the previous month. British Columbia reported the smallest gain (12.7 per cent).

 

 

On a year over year basis, seasonally adjusted retail trade increased 3.8 per cent nationally. All the provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Newfoundland and Labrador (10.6 per cent) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (4.1 per cent) over the same month last year. Ontario reported the smallest gain (1.8 per cent).

 

Nova Scotia Sectors 

Unadjusted Year-over-year (Jun 2020 vs Jun 2019), retail trade increased 5.5 per cent ($80.5 million)  to $1.6 million.

  • Nova Scotia's unadjusted retails sales were up (Jun-20 vs Jun-19) for:
  • Furniture with a 2% share  increased 3.9 per cent ($1.4 million)
  • Electronics with a 1% share  increased 10.4 per cent ($1.2 million)
  • Building Material with a 10% share  increased 25.0 per cent ($31.7 million)
  • Food & Beverage with a 21% share  increased 4.1 per cent ($12.7 million)
  • Sporting & Hobbies with a 2% share  increased 20.1 per cent ($4.3 million)
  • General Merchandise with a 16% share  increased 39.7 per cent ($69.5 million)
  • Miscellaneous Stores with a 3% share  increased 9.7 per cent ($4.0 million)

Nova Scotia's unadjusted retails sales were down (Jun-20 vs Jun-19 unadjusted) for:

  • Motor Vehicle with a 26% share of Retail Trade decreased 4.3 per cent ($18.1 million)
  • Health with a 6% share  decreased 4.6 per cent ($4.6 million)
  • Gas Stations with a 10% share  decreased 6.7 per cent ($11.5 million)
  • Clothing with a 3% share  decreased 20.0 per cent ($10.0 million)

 

 

 

Canada Sectors

Nationally, declines in retail sales (Jun-20 vs Jun-19 seasonally adjusted) were reported in 

  • Clothing stores: -21.7 per cent
  • Gas stations: -19.6 per cent

Nationally, increases in retail sales (Jun-20 vs Jun-19 seasonally adjusted) were reported in 

  • Motor vehicle/parts dealers: 3.4 per cent 
  • Sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores: 22.5 per cent
  • Miscellaneous stores: 9.8 per cent
  • Building material and garden equipment stores: 5.2 per cent
  • Health and personal care stores: 5.7 per cent
  • Food and beverage stores: 11.8 per cent
  • General merchandise stores: 17.2 per cent
  • Electronics and appliance stores: 2.4 per cent
  • Furniture stores: 2.3 per cent

 

E-Commerce

In Canada June 2020, on a month-over-month basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales decreased 17.5 per cent over May 2020 to $3.2 billion, representing a 5.7% share of total retail trade.  On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales increased 70.6 per cent over June 2019.

Cannabis stores

In Nova Scotia, June 2020, on a month-over-month basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales increased 3.6 per cent over May 2020 to $6.1 million. On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales increased 11.8 per cent over June 2019. 

In Canada, June 2020, on a month-over-month basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales increased 7.9 per cent over May 2020 to $201.1 million. On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail cannabis store sales increased 119.3 per cent over June 2019.
