EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 0.8 per cent in July 2020 over June 2020. In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 1.3 per cent in July 2020.

In the European Union, on a year-over-year basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 1.0 per cent in July 2020 vs July 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 0.6 per cent in July 2020 vs July 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union July 2020 vs July 2019, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-over-year retail sales occurred in:

  • Ireland (+9.0%)
  • Lithuania (+6.6%)
  • France (+6.3%)
  • Netherlands (+5.8%)
  • Denmark (+5.7%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Bulgaria (-17.9%)
  • Malta (-7.4%)
  • Croatia (-4.8%)
  • Slovenia (-4.7%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strong growth in July 2020 vs July 2019 is found in

  • Hardware, appliances (+11.9%)
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+3.5%)

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-22.5%)
  • Automotive fuel (-19.7%)

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strong growth in July 2020 vs July 2019 is found in

  • Hardware, appliances (+11.7%)
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+3.6%) 

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-21.0%)
  • Automotive fuel (-19.4%)

Mail and internet sales were up 16.8 per cent in the Euro Area. Mail and internet sales were up 19.4 per cent in the European Union.
