LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - AUGUST 2020

In Nova Scotia August 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 1.1 per cent (5,300) from July 2020 to 494,500 and decreased 1.9 per cent  (9,500) over August 2019
  • Employment increased 1.6 per cent (7,200) from July 2020 to 443,700 and decreased 4.4 per cent (20,400) over August 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 3.8 per cent (2,000) from July 2020 to 50,800 and increased 27.3 per cent (10,900) over August 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.5 percentage points from July 2020 to 10.3 per cent.

 

In Canada August 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 0.5 per cent (109,100) from July 2020 to 20,138,600 and decreased 0.7 per cent (134,400) over August 2019
  • Employment increased 1.4 per cent (245,800) from July 2020 to 18,091,700 and decreased 5.3 per cent (1,021,600) over August 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 6.3 per cent (136,700) from July 2020 to 2,046,900 and increased 76.5 per cent (887,200) over August 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.7 percentage points from July 2020 at 10.2 per cent.

 

In Halifax August 2020,  (seasonally-adjusted), adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force increased 2.5 per cent (6,300) from July 2020 to 259,600 and increased 0.2 per cent (600) over August 2019
  • Employment increased 3.5 per cent (7,900) from July 2020 to 233,500 and decreased 4.4 per cent (10,800) over August 2019
  • Unemployment decreased 5.8 per cent (1,600) from July 2020 to 26,100 and increased 77.6 per cent (11,400) over August 2019
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.8 percentage points from July 2020 to 10.1 per cent

 

Statistics Canada Quotes

"In Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia had the largest employment gain in August, up 7,200 (+1.6%), mostly in part-time work. The unemployment rate was little changed at 10.3%, as more Nova Scotians participated in the labour market."
