EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2020

 

 

Month-over-month (Aug 2020 vs Jul 2020)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.8 per cent. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 4.4 per cent. 

 

Year-to-date (Jan-Aug 2020 vs Jan-Aug 2019)

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 2.0 per cent. In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 2.5 per cent. 

  

 

By member state,

In the European Union Jan-Aug 2020 vs Jan-Aug 2019, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Finland (3.7%)
  • Netherlands (3.0%)
  • Germany (2.8%)
  • Denmark (2.3%)
  • Estonia (2.2%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Bulgaria (-11.6%)
  • Spain (-8.5%)
  • Slovenia (-8.5%)
  • Luxembourg (-8.3%)

 

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth for Jan-Aug 2020 vs Jan-Aug 2019 is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.4%)
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetics (+0.3%)

The largest declines occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-27.9%)
  • Automotive fuel (-21.7%)

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth for Jan-Aug 2020 vs Jan-Aug 2019 is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.2%)
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetics (+0.7%)

The largest declines occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-26.6%)
  • Automotive fuel (-20.9%)

Comparing Jan-Aug 2020 to Jan-Aug 2019, mail and internet sales were up 19.8 per cent in the Euro Area, and up 21.7 per cent in the European Union.
