NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, AUGUST 2020

Year-to-date (Jan-Aug20 vs Jan-Aug19, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 31.8% comparing the first 8 months of 2020 with the same months in 2019. The 24,889 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Aug20 had a sales value of $988.9 million, down 28.4% from Jan-Aug19.  

Canada's new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 28.4% from Jan-Aug19 to Jan-Aug20. The 978,790 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Aug20 had a sales value of $43.76 billion, down 25.5% from Jan-Aug19.  

Year-to-date (YTD) unit sales were down in all provinces, with the largest declines in Nova Scotia and Ontario.  The smallest declines in YTD unit sales were reported in in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.

Year-over-year (Aug20 vs Aug19, unadjusted) CORRECTED

A previous version of this report had incorrectly labelled charts depicting year-over-year change in unit sales as change in sales value (and vice versa).  A corrected version follows.

After large year-over-year declines from March to June, new motor vehicle sales values in Jul20 exceeded the total from Jul19 (though unit sales were down 3.9%).  Nova Scotia's Aug20 motor vehicle sales values were 5.0% below the total from Aug19.  Unit sales were down 8.2%.

Average Prices (Jan-Aug20 vs Jan-Aug19)

Nova Scotia's average unit prices for new motor vehicles increased by 4.9 per cent between Jan-Aug19 and Jan-Aug20.  National unit prices were up 4.1 per cent.  The strongest gains were reported in Manitoba while the weakest were in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($49,728) while Prince Edward Island reported the lowest average unit prices ($37,203).

Average unit prices were $39,632 for all new motor vehicles sold in Nova Scotia during August.  Truck/SUVs had an average unit price of $42,763 while passenger cars had an average unit price of $29,089.

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan-Aug20 vs Jan-Aug19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of trucks/SUVs (77.0% of unit sales) decreased 26.3% from Jan-Aug19.  Unit sales of passenger cars decreased 45.4%.

Nova Scotia sales value of trucks/SUVs (83.2% of sales value) declined 24.3% compared to Jan-Aug19.  Sales value of passenger cars fell by 43.6%.

Country of Manufacture (Jan-Aug20 vs Jan-Aug19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (73.3% of unit sales) decreased 33.0% compared with the first eight months of 2019.  Unit sales from overseas manufacturers decreased by 28.4%.

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (76.6% of sales value) declined 28.8% compared to the first eight months of 2019.  Sales value of overseas manufacturers decreased by 27.3%.
