UK RETAIL SALES, SEPTEMBER 2020

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales increased in September 2020. This is the fifth consecutive monthly increase when compared with the record falls experienced in March and April. In September 2020, retail sales volumes were 5.5 per cent above February 2020 levels. Retail sales values were 3.9 per cent higher than in February 2020.                                                                                                           

  • Month-over-month retail sales value increased 1.4 per cent while the retail sales volume (adjusted for price changes) increased 1.5 per cent over August 2020.
  • Year-over-year retail sales value increased 3.4 per cent and retail sales volume increased 4.7 per cent over September 2019. 

Internet sales

  • Online retail sales fell by 1.2 per cent in September when compared with August 2020.
  • In September, online sales share of all retail sales decreased slightly to 27.5 per cent from 28.3 per cent in August 2020. Online sales share of all retail sales increased from 20.1 per cent in February 2020 to 27.5 per cent in September 2020.
