US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, OCTOBER 2020

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers was virtually unchanged in October following a 0.2 per cent increase in September 2020.

Component indexes were mixed, with many offsetting increases and decreases. The food index increased 0.2 per cent, with the food away from home index increasing by 0.3 percent and a smaller 0.1 percent increase in the food at home index. The energy index increased 0.1 per cent in October as the index for electricity increased 1.2 percent.

In October, the index for all items less food and energy were virtually unchanged. The index for shelter increased 0.1 percent, which was offset by a 0.4 percent decrease in the index for medical care. The indexes for airline fares, recreation, and new vehicles increased, while the indexes for motor vehicle insurance, apparel, and household furnishings and operations declined.

Year-over-year (October 2020 compared to October 2019) consumer prices increased 1.2 per cent (not seasonally adjusted). The index for all-items less food and energy increased 1.6 per cent. The food index increased 3.9 per cent while the energy index declined 9.2 per cent.
