NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, SEPTEMBER 2020

Year-to-date (Jan-Sep20 vs Jan-Sep19, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 27.9% comparing the first 9 months of 2020 with the same months in 2019. The 29,465 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Sep20 had a sales value of $1,170.1 million, down 25.3% from Jan-Sep19.  

Canada's new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 25.0% from Jan-Sep19 to Jan-Sep20. The 1,152,774 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Sep20 had a sales value of $51.43 billion, down 22.3% from Jan-Sep19.  

Year-to-date (YTD) unit sales were down in all provinces, with the largest declines in Nova Scotia and Ontario.  The smallest declines in YTD unit sales were reported in in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. 

YTD sales values were down in all provinces, with the largest declines in Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia.  The decline in sales values were smaller in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

 

Year-over-year (Sep20 vs Sep19, unadjusted)

After year-over-year declines from March to August, Nova Scotia's Sep20 new motor vehicle unit sales climbed 4.3% above Sep19 levels.  National sales were 2.4% above Sep19 levels, with gains in all provinces except Ontario.  

New motor vehicle sales values were also down sharply when COVID-19 restrictions were imposed in the spring.  Nova Scotia's new motor vehicle sales values did creep slightly above 2019 levels in July (0.5%), but remained below last year's levels in both August (-5.0%) and September (-2.2%).  National new motor vehicle sales values were up 2.5% compared with Sep19 levels; only Ontario and Nova Scotia reported lower sales values. 

Average Prices (Jan-Sep20 vs Jan-Sep19)

Nova Scotia's average unit prices for new motor vehicles increased by 3.6% between Jan-Sep19 and Jan-Sep20, the same pace as national unit prices.  Stronger gains were reported in Manitoba and Alberta, while the weaker growth was observed in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($49,533) while Prince Edward Island reported the lowest average unit prices ($37,226).

Average unit prices were $39,588 for all new motor vehicles sold in Nova Scotia during Sep20.  Truck/SUVs had an average unit price of $42,786 while passenger cars had an average unit price of $27,929.

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan-Sep20 vs Jan-Sep19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of trucks/SUVs (77.2% of unit sales) decreased 22.2% from Jan-Sep19.  Unit sales of passenger cars decreased 42.4%.

Nova Scotia sales value of trucks/SUVs (83.5% of sales value) declined 21.2% compared to Jan-Sep19.  Sales value of passenger cars fell by 40.8%.

Country of Manufacture (Jan-Sep20 vs Jan-Sep19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (73.7% of unit sales) decreased 28.6% compared with the first nine months of 2019.  Unit sales from overseas manufacturers decreased by 26.1%.

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (76.9% of sales value) declined 25.5% compared to the first nine months of 2019.  Sales value of overseas manufacturers decreased by 24.9%.
