NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE OCTOBER 2020

 

Year-to-Date by Sector (Jan-Oct 2020 vs Jan-Oct 2019,  customs based, unadjusted)

In Nova Scotia  International Merchandise Trade Exports decreased 15.9%  ($816.0 million)  to $4,309.6 million.

Sector value increases occurred in

  • Metal/Ores ($18.8 million)
  • Energy ($3.8 million)

 Sector value declines occurred in

  • Motor vehicles/Parts (-$235.4 million)
  • Farm, Fishing, Intermediate Food Products (-$173.9 million)
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials (-$153.8 million)
  • Consumer Goods (-$111.4 and million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber (-$69.5 million)
  • Machinery/Equipment (-$44.0 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products (-$31.4 million)
  • Electronics (-$7.8 million)
  • Transportation Equipment (-$5.8 million) and
  • Special Transactions (-$5.6 million)

 

 

Year to date - By Province (Jan-Oct 2020)

  • Nova Scotia reported a 15.9% loss in merchandise trade exports.
  • Canada reported a 14.0% loss in merchandise trade exports.
  • Saskatchewan reported the highest increase (3.6%) while
  • Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest decline (27.0%)  in merchandise trade exports

TREND NOVA SCOTIA AND CANADA (Year over year, Oct 2017 to Oct 2020, unadjusted)

October 2020, Nova Scotia  International Merchandise Trade Exports reported a 7.6% loss in merchandise trade exports. This compares to a 5.0% gain in merchandise trade exports   in Oct 2019 and a 6.5% gain in merchandise trade exports in  Oct 2018.

October 2020, Canada  International Merchandise Trade Exports reported a 7.9% loss in merchandise trade exports. This compares to a 1.5% loss in merchandise trade exports in  Oct 2019 and a 13.9% gain in merchandise trade exports in Oct 2018.

  • United States decreased 12.4% (-$398.0 million)
  • Mexico decreased 34.9% (-$18.6 million)

  • China decreased 21.5% (-$167.2 million)
  • Japan  decreased 8.7% (-$6.8 million)
  • South Korea  decreased 5.6% (-$5.2 million)
  • Hong Kong  decreased 54.1% (-$32.6 million)
  • India  increased 67.5% ($16.0 million)
  • Taiwan increased 20.1% ($2.3 million)
  • Indonesia  decreased 88.8% (-$16.4 million)
  • Singapore  decreased 83.0% (-$24.8 million)

 

In Europe, exports to

  • United Kingdom  decreased 13.2% (-$10.1 million)
  • Germany  increased 2.6% ($1.2 million)
  • Italy  decreased 19.2% (-$2.8 million)
  • France  decreased 6.8% (-$5.0 million)
  • Netherlands  increased 18.5% ($12.1 million)
  • Belgium  increased 8.0% ($3.1 million)
  • Spain  decreased 14.0% (-$5.7 million)
  • Norway increased 18.4% ($3.1 million)
  • Switzerland decreased 26.0% (-$1.7 million)
  • Russian Federation decreased 21.4% (-$0.7 million)

 

In other countries, exports to

  • Brazil decreased 19.7% (-$2.6 million)
  • Peru increased 22.9% ($0.2 million)
  • Algeria increased 77.8% ($0.01 million)
  • Saudi Arabia increased 161.9% ($1.4 million)
  • Turkey decreased 28.9% (-$1.5 million)
  • Iraq decreased 57.1% (-$2.3 million)
  • Australia decreased 3.8% (-$0.7 million)
  • Residual decreased 2.1% (-$5.4 million)
