NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES, OCTOBER 2020

Year-to-date (Jan-Oct20 vs Jan-Oct19, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 25.3% comparing the first 10 months of 2020 with the same months in 2019. The 33,655 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Oct20 had a sales value of $1,334.9 million, down 22.8% from Jan-Oct19.  

Canada's new motor vehicles unit sales decreased 22.9% from Jan-Oct19 to Jan-Oct20. The 1,311,790 new motor vehicles sold from Jan-Oct20 had a sales value of $58.45 billion, down 20.3% from Jan-Oct19.  

Year-to-date (YTD) unit sales were down in all provinces, with the largest declines in Nova Scotia and Ontario.  The smallest declines in YTD unit sales were reported in in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.

Year-over-year (Oct20 vs Oct19, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia's Oct20 new motor vehicle unit sales climbed 0.5% above Oct19 levels.  National sales were 2.5% below Oct19 levels, with declines in New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta.  

Nova Scotia's new motor vehicle sales values in Oct20 rose to 1.7% above their level in Oct19.  National new motor vehicle sales values were down 0.7% compared with Oct19 levels; only New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario reported lower sales values. 

Average Prices (Jan-Oct20 vs Jan-Oct19)

Nova Scotia's average unit prices for new motor vehicles increased by 3.3% between Jan-Oct19 and Jan-Oct20, close to the pace in national unit prices.  Stronger gains were reported in Manitoba and Alberta, while the weaker growth was observed in Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.  Alberta continues to report the highest average unit price for new motor vehicle sales ($49,591) while Prince Edward Island reported the lowest average unit prices ($37,221).

Average unit prices were $39,365 for all new motor vehicles sold in Nova Scotia during Oct20.  Truck/SUVs had an average unit price of $42,053 while passenger cars had an average unit price of $28,451.

Passenger Cars and Trucks/SUVs (Jan-Oct20 vs Jan-Oct19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of trucks/SUVs (77.6% of unit sales) decreased 19.2% from Jan-Oct19.  Unit sales of passenger cars decreased 40.7%.

Nova Scotia sales value of trucks/SUVs (83.8% of sales value) declined 18.5% compared to Jan-Oct19.  Sales value of passenger cars fell by 39.4%.

 

Country of Manufacture (Jan-Oct20 vs Jan-Oct19)

Nova Scotia unit sales of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (73.6% of unit sales) decreased 25.7% compared with the first ten months of 2019.  Unit sales from overseas manufacturers decreased by 24.3%.

Nova Scotia sales value of North American manufactured new motor vehicles (76.7% of sales value) declined 22.7% compared to the first ten months of 2019.  Sales value of overseas manufacturers decreased by 23.2%.
