Month-over-month (Nov 2020 vs Oct 2020)
In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 5.0%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 6.1%.
Year-to-date (Jan-Nov 2020 vs Jan-Nov 2019)
In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 1.0%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 1.4%.
By member state,
In the European Union Jan-Nov 2020 vs Jan-Nov 2019, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:
- Germany (+4.0%)
- Denmark (+3.9%)
- Finland (+3.9%)
- Netherlands (+3.4%)
- Estonia (+3.2%)
The weakest growth occurred in
- Bulgaria (-10.7%)
- Slovenia (-9.3%)
- Italy (-7.8%, Jan to Oct)
- Spain (-7.1%)
- Malta (-7.0%)
By retail sector,
In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth for Jan-Nov 2020 vs Jan-Nov 2019 is found in
- Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.4%)
- Hardware, appliances (+1.8%)
The largest declines occurred in
- Clothing, footwear (-24.0%)
- Automotive fuel (-21.4%)
In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth for Jan-Nov 2020 vs Jan-Nov 2019 is found in
- Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.2%)
- Hardware, appliances (+2.7%)
The largest declines occurred in
- Clothing, footwear (-23.0%)
- Automotive fuel (-20.7%)
Comparing Jan-Nov 2020 to Jan-Nov 2019, mail and internet sales were up 22.1% in the Euro Area, and up 23.8% in the European Union.
