MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, NOVEMBER 2020

Month over month (seasonally adjusted, November vs. October 2020)
Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 6.2% to $734.5 million.  National shipments decreased 0.6% to $53.66 billion.  Manufacturing shipments were down in 6 of 10 provinces, with the largest declines in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. New Brunswick and Alberta reported the largest gains.

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 0.5%.  National shipments decreased 4.8%.  Manufacturing shipments were down in 8 of 10 provinces, with the largest declines in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. British Columbia and Manitoba were the only provinces to report gains.

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 5.8%. National shipments decreased 12.1%. Manufacturing shipments were down in all 10 provinces, with the largest declines in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. Manitoba, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island reported the smallest declines.

Nova Scotia's durable goods shipments decreased 1.8%, while non-durable goods shipments decreased 7.7%.

In unadjusted data for Halifax, durable goods shipments increased 2.8%, while non-durables increased 0.6%. Outside Halifax, unadjusted durable goods shipments decreased 16.4%, while non-durables decreased 17.3%.

Trends

In the nine months leading up to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shipments had been trending down both in Canada and in Nova Scotia.  After the pandemic was declared, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments declined sharply, falling 14.2% from February to May.  National shipments reached their trough earlier, falling 34.9% from February to April.  Since then, Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments have recovered and were 1.9% higher in November than in February.  National shipments rebounded quickly through July, but growth has slowed since then and Canadian manufacturing shipments in November were 3.8% below February levels.
