MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted Nov 2020 to Oct 2020)
- In Nova Scotia Retail Trade increased 3.6% to $1,478.5 million
- Nationally, Retail Trade increased 1.3% to $55.2 billion
- Nine provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with
- New Brunswick (6.0% ) reporting the largest gain and
- Manitoba (-3.1%) reporting the only decline
YEAR OVER YEAR (seasonally adjusted Nov 2020 vs Nov 2019)
- In Nova Scotia Retail Trade increased 9.0%.
- Nationally, Retail Trade increased 7.5% .
- All provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with
- Prince Edward Island (13.6% ) reporting the largest gain and
- Ontario (4.6%) reporting the smallest gain.

- Nationally, Retail Trade decreased -1.8%
- Five provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, with
- British Columbia (1.7%) reporting the largest gain and
- Ontario (-3.4%) reporting the largest decline

YEAR TO DATE (Unadjusted Jan-Nov 2020 to Jan-Nov 2019)
Retails sales were up for:
- Electronics increased 5.3% or $7.7 million
- Building Material increased 13.3% or $145.9 million
- Food & Beverage increased 7.4% or $239.8 million
- Health increased 1.0% or $11.1 million
- General Merchandise increased 11.0% or $191.2 million
- Miscellaneous Stores increased 9.0% or $36.3 million
Retails sales were down for:
- Retail Trade decreased -2.6% or -$386.9 million
- Motor Vehicle decreased -13.3% or -$548.1 million
- Furniture decreased -4.4% or -$16.8 million
- Gas Stations decreased -16.2% or -$298.5 million
- Clothing decreased -27.2% or -$140.0 million
- Sporting & Hobbies decreased -6.4% or -$15.4 million
TRENDS (Jan 2013 to Nov 2020)
Canada and Nova Scotia (2013 to 2020)
Nova Scotia's retail sales declined sharply from February 2020 to April 2020. Retail sales rebounded over the next seven months. Compared to February 2020, Nova Scotia's November 2020 retail sales were 7.0% above their pre-pandemic levels.
National retail sales also rebounded after the sharp decline in February and March. Retail sales have increased over seven consecutive month and are now 5.6% above pre-pandemic levels.
All provincial monthly retail sales are above pre-pandemic levels. Prince Edward Island leads all the other provinces with a 10.2% increase above its pre-pandemic level. Ontario has gained the least (3.2%).
E-COMMERCE

- Canada's retail e-commerce sales were $4.3 billion or 7.7% of total retail sales.
- On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales increased 75.9%
- On a year-to-date basis, retail e-commerce sales increased 70.7%
