EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2020

 

Month-over-month (Dec 2020 vs Nov 2020)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 2.1%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 2.3%. 

 

ANNUAL (2020 vs 2019)

In the European Union, on an annual, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 0.7%.

In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 1.2%.

 

 

By member state,

 

In the European Union 2020 vs 2019, where data is available, the strongest growth in retail sales occurred in:

  • Germany (+4.8%)
  • Netherlands (+4.2%)
  • Denmark (+3.9%)
  • Finland (+3.8%)
  • Poland (+3.1%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Slovenia (-12.1%)
  • Bulgaria (-10.7%)
  • Italy (-7.9%, Jan to Nov)
  • Spain (-7.6%)
  • Malta (-6.3%)

 

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth for 2020 vs 2019 is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.5%)
  • Hardware, appliances (+1.0%)

The largest declines occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-25.6%)
  • Automotive fuel (-21.5%)

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth for 2020 vs 2019 is found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+5.3%)
  • Hardware, appliances (+1.9%)

The largest declines occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-24.6%)
  • Automotive fuel (-20.8%)

Comparing 2020 to 2019, mail and internet sales were up 22.9% in the Euro Area, and up 24.6% in the European Union.
