LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - JANUARY 2021

MONTH OVER MONTH (Jan 2021 vs Dec 2020, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 1.2% (6,100) to 504,800
  • Employment increased 1.7% (7,800) to 462,700
  • Unemployment decreased 3.9% (-1,700) to 42,100
  • Unemployment Rate decreased 0.5 percentage points to 8.3%.

In Canada, 

  • Labour force decreased 0.4% (-87,800) to 20,171,000
  • Employment decreased 1.2% (-212,800) to 18,272,000
  • Unemployment increased 7.1% (125,100) to 1,899,000
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.6 percentage points to 9.4%.

In Halifax, (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 1.1% (2,800) to 258,200
  • Employment increased 0.9% (2,200) to 238,700
  • Unemployment increased 2.1% (400) to 19,400
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 7.5%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 0.6% (2,800)
  • Employment decreased 0.3% (-1,200)
  • Unemployment increased 10.5% (4,000)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.7 percentage points

In Canada,

  • Labour force decreased 0.4% (-72,000)
  • Employment decreased 4.4% (-834,100)
  • Unemployment increased 67.0% (762,200)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 3.8 percentage points

In Halifax, (3-month moving average)

  • Labour force increased 3.0% (7,500)
  • Employment increased 1.8% (4,300)
  • Unemployment increased 19.0% (3,100)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 1 percentage point
