US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, JANUARY 2021

The United States Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.3% in January 2021, following a 0.2% increase in the previous month. 

The increase in the all items CPI in January was mostly due to higher gasoline prices which increased 7.4% month-over-month in January. The food index increased 0.1% in January. The food away from home index increased 0.3% in January while the index for food at home was down 0.1%. 

The CPI for all items less food and energy remained unchanged in January 2021. There were price increases in apparel, medical care, shelter, and motor vehicle insurance. The indexes for recreation, used cars and trucks, airline fares, and new vehicles all declined in January 2021.

Year-over-year (January 2021 vs January 2020) consumer prices increased 1.4% (not seasonally adjusted). The index for all-items less food and energy increased 1.4%. The food index increased 3.8% while the energy index declined 3.6%.
