EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2021

 

Month-over-month (Jan 2021 vs Dec 2020)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 4.2%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 5.0%. 

 

Year-over-year (Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

In the European Union, on a year-over-year basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 4.9%.

In the Euro Area, retail sales were down 5.9%.

 

By member state,

In the European Union January 2021 vs January 2020, where data is available, the strongest growth in retail sales occurred in:

  • Estonia (+6.6%)
  • Finland (+5.9%)
  • Belgium (+3.9%)
  • Romania (+3.7%, Dec 2020 vs Dec 2019)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Austria (-17.2%)
  • Slovenia (-15.6%)
  • Portugal (-11.4%)
  • Greece (-11.2%, Dec 2020 vs Dec 2019)
  • Latvia (-10.1%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Automotive fuel (-23.3%) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+6.9).

In the European Union Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Automotive fuel (-21.2%) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+6.5).

Comparing January 2021 to January 2020, mail and internet sales were up 40.1% in the Euro Area, and up 40.8% in the European Union.
