WHOLESALE TRADE, JANUARY 2021

MONTH-OVER-MONTH (seasonally adjusted, Jan 2021 vs Dec 2020)

In percentage terms:

Nova Scotia wholesale Trade decreased 0.2% to $998.9 million.

Canada wholesale Trade increased 4.0% to $69.2 billion.

Seven provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with New Brunswick (13.9%) reporting the largest gain and Manitoba(1.5%) reported the largest decline.

                                                                        

YEAR-OVER-YEAR(seasonally adjusted, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

Nova Scotia wholesale trade increased 4.4% to $1.0 billion.

Canada wholesale trade increased 8.1% to $69.2 billion.

All provinces reported year-over-year increases in wholesale trade, with British Columbia (19.4%) reporting the largest gain and Nova Scotia (4.4%) reported the smallest gain.

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS (seasonally adjusted, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

Nova Scotia total wholesale trade increased 4.4% ($42.2 million).

  • Food, beverage decreased 12.4% (-$43.9 million).
  • Motor vehicle and parts decreased 2.9% (-$5.0 million).
  • Building material increased 27.0% ($45.8 million).
  • Machinery, equipment increased 17.1% ($25.1 million).
  • Miscellaneous wholesalers increased 29.6% ($19.4 million).
  • Other wholesalers increased 1.8% ($0.8 million).

 

 

TRENDS ( January 2013 to January 2021)

Wholesale trade in January was higher than the February pre-pandemic benchmark for all provinces.  except one.  

 

 COVID-19 PERIOD (February 2020 to January 2021)

Since the pre-pandemic period in February 2020, Nova Scotia wholesale trade increased 15.4%. In Canada wholesale trade increased 7.2%.

All provinces posted increases in wholesale trade over the period, with Ontario (4.6%) posting the smallest gain, and Prince Edward Island the greates gain (30.9%)

 

INVENTORIES (Jan 2021 vs Dec 2020)

In Canada, wholesale inventories increased 0.7% to $90.9 billion.
