RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2021

MONTH OVER MONTH (seasonally adjusted Jan 2021 to Dec 2020)

In Nova Scotia Retail Trade increased 3.6% to $1,473.6 million. Nationally, Retail Trade decreased -1.1% to $52.5 billion. Eight provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Manitoba (15.6% ) reporting the largest gain. Quebec (-9.8%) reporting the largest decline.

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (seasonally adjusted Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)

 

In Nova Scotia Retail Trade increased 6.6%. Nationally, Retail Trade increased 1.3%. Eight provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Newfoundland and Labrador (15.9% ) reporting the largest gain Quebec(-6.1%) reporting the largest decline.

 

 

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

 

YEAR TO DATE (Unadjusted Jan 2021 to Jan 2020)

Retail Trade increased 5.0% or $58.6 million.

Sectors that increased:

  • Furniture increased 4.7% or $1.4 million
  • Electronics increased 17.2% or $1.9 million
  • Building Material increased 39.7% or $28.7 million
  • Food & Beverage increased 5.7% or $15.6 million
  • Sporting & Hobbies increased 11.8% or $2.0 million
  • General Merchandise increased 19.7% or $25.0 million
  • Miscellaneous Stores increased 23.7% or $7.4 million

Sectors that declined:

  • Motor Vehicle decreased -1.8% or -$5.7 million
  • Health decreased -0.3% or -$0.4 million
  • Gas Stations decreased -7.3% or -$11.4 million
  • Clothing decreased -17.9% or -$5.9 million

 

TRENDS (Jan 2013 to Jan 2021)

Nova Scotia's retail sales declined sharply from February 2020 to April 2020. Retail sales rebounded over the next eight months. Compared to February 2020, Nova Scotia's January 2021 retail sales were 6.7% above their pre-pandemic levels. 

National retail sales also rebounded after the sharp decline in March and April 2020. Retail sales  are now only 0.5% above pre-pandemic levels. Canadian month over month retail sales declined 1.1% in January 2021. While eight provinces monthly retail sales are above pre-pandemic levels, Quebec and Ontario reported lower levels than in February 2020. after declining in recent months.

 

E-Commerce

In January Canada's retail e-commerce sales were $3.5 billion or 8.2% of total retail sales.

On a year-over-year basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales increased 110.7%
