ASPECTS OF QUALITY OF EMPLOYMENT IN CANADA, FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2020

From mid-February to mid-March 2020, the 2020 Survey on Quality of Employment (SQE) collected information on perspectives of job quality in Canada. Estimates reflect employment characteristics before the full onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unless otherwise stated, the analysis focuses on the 23.5 million workers who were employed in February or March 2020, or who had last worked in 2018 or after, and excludes unpaid family workers.                                                 

Among all workers, 51.2% reported access to a pension plan, 52.1% had access to paid sick leave and 60.9% reported access to paid vacation. Women were more likely to report access to paid leave than men. Employees on a fixed-term were less likely to report access to a pension plan and paid leave, followed by self-employed individuals with employees, and self-employed without employees.

Among all workers, 48.3% reported access to disability insurance or death benefits, 54.0% had access to supplemental medical or dental care and 44.8% reported access to workers’ compensation. Men were more likely to report access to all three benefit categories than women. Employees on a fixed-term were less likely to report access to these benefits, followed by self-employed individuals with employees, and self-employed without employees.

13.4% of workers reported being a multiple job holder, with 5.8% of workers doing so to earn extra income, 3.2% doing so out of interest, and 2.8% of workers needing an additional job to cover essential needs. Women were more likely to report having multiple jobs for financial reasons then men. Self-employed individuals were more likely to report having multiple jobs due to interest or passion for a job.

Among all workers, 55.2% reported access to structured training. Among workers with access to structured training, more than half reported training at the workplace during work time as the usual arrangement.
