EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, FEBRUARY 2021

 

Month-over-month (Feb 2021 vs Jan 2021)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 2.6%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 2.8%. 

 

Year-to-date (Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 2.9%. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were down 3.6%. 

 

By member state,

In the European Union Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Belgium (+7.6%)
  • Finland (+5.0%)
  • Estonia (+4.4%)
  • Sweden (+3.8%)
  • Romania (+3.2%)


The weakest growth occurred in:

  • Slovakia (-15.3%)
  • Portugal (-13.2%)
  • Cyprus (-11.2, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020)
  • Latvia (-9.6%)
  • Slovenia (-8.9%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Clothing, footwear (-29.0%, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020), Automotive fuel (-19.2%) and Computers, telecommunications (-7.2%, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020 ) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+4.6).

In the European Union Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Clothing, footwear (-28.3%, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020), Automotive fuel (-17.8%) and Computers, telecommunications (-6.8%, Jan 2021 vs Jan 2020) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+4.4).

Comparing Jan-Feb 2021 to Jan-Feb 2020, mail and internet sales were up 39.0% in the Euro Area, and up 39.6% in the European Union.
