US RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2021

Month over month (March 2021, seasonally adjusted)

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of US retail and food service sales increased 9.8% ($55.4 billion) to $619.1 billion. Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 9.4% ($48.0 billion). Food service and drinking place month-over-month receipts increased 13.4% ($7.3 billion).                                                                                                  

Year-over-year (Mar-21 vs Mar-20, seasonally adjusted)

Compared to March 2020, US retail trade and food services increased 27.7% ($134.4 billion). Retail trade increased 26.9% ($117.9 billion), while food services and drinking places sales increased 36.0% ($16.4 billion). 

Compared to February 2020, US retail trade and food services and drinking places increased 17.1%, as retail trade increased 20.2% and food services and drinking places declined 4.8%.

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, seasonally adjusted)

The United States Retail Trade and Food Services increased 14.3% ($220.3 billion) to $1,762.4 billion. Retail trade increased 16.4% ($224.0 billion) and food services and drinking places sales decreased 2.1% ($3.7 billion). Sales were up in all retail categories (for which data are available) except food services and drinking places, with the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in sporting and recreation (36.3%). Food services and drinking places declined 2.1% for the first quarter of 2021.
