US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, MARCH 2021

BUILDING PERMITS

According to the US Census Bureau and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, residential building permits rose 2.7% from the revised February estimate of 1,720,000 permits to a seasonally adjusted rate of 1,766,000 permits in March 2021.

US residential building permits increased 30.2% over the same month last year. Permits increased for all structure types, as permits for single unit structures increased 35.6%, those with 2 to 4 units increased 28.3%, and permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 19.2%.

In the first three months of 2021, residential permits are up 24.1%, with increased for single unit structures (+26.6%), those with 2 to 4 units (+20.9%) and structures with 5 or more units (+18.9%).

HOUSING STARTS

In March 2021, US housing starts rose 19.4% compared to the revised February estimate of 1,457,000, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,739,000 units. 

US housing starts increased 37.0% over March 2020. Starts for single unit structures increased 40.7%, and starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 26.9%.

Year to date, US housing starts are up 8.6% compared to Jan-Mar 2020, with higher single unit starts (19.3%) but lower starts for structures with 5 or more units (-12.5%).
