Canadian direct investment abroad increased by 4.2% in 2020 to reach $1,469.3 billion. The stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Canada grew 2.7% to $1,046.3 billion. The net foreign direct investment position grew to $423.0 billion. Foreign direct investment activity slowed globally in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The majority of Canadian direct investment is within North America (60.1%) with $669.1 billion destined for the United States in 2020. North America also represents the largest share of FDI in Canada, although investment from Europe has increased in recent years to reach 40.0% of FDI in 2020. In 2020, the United States was the leading investor of FDI in Canada at $456.8 billion in 2020.
Over three-quarters of Canadian direct investment abroad in 2020 was in service industries, led by finance and insurance, management of companies and enterprises, and transportation and warehousing. FDI in Canada has a larger share of investment in goods industries, including oil and gas extraction and manufacturing industries.
