EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, MARCH 2021

 

Month-over-month (Mar 2021 vs Feb 2021)

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 2.9%. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 2.9%. 

 

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020)

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 2.5%. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.1%. 

 

By member state,

In the European Union Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Belgium (+9.5%)
  • France (+8.5%)
  • Romania (+6.3%)
  • Denmark (+6.0%)
  • Sweden (+5.9%)


The weakest growth occurred in:

  • Slovakia (-9.7%)
  • Portugal (-9.0%)
  • Italy (-6.4%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)
  • Cyprus (-5.8%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)
  • Czechia (-5.8%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Clothing, footwear (-24.6%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020), Automotive fuel (-8.1%) and Computers, telecommunications (-5.3%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+3.0%).

In the European Union Jan-Mar 2021 vs Jan-Mar 2020, by retail sector, retail sales decreased in Clothing, footwear (-24.4%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020), Automotive fuel (-7.5%) and Computers, telecommunications (-5.0%, Jan-Feb 2021 vs Jan-Feb 2020) while retail sales increased in Food, beverage, tobacco (+2.9%).

Comparing Jan-Mar 2021 to Jan-Mar 2020, mail and internet sales were up 40.2% in the Euro Area, and up 40.7% in the European Union.
