UK GDP Q1 2021 (FIRST ESTIMATE)

The Office for National Statistics (ONS)' first estimate of UK Gross Domestic Product (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) for Q1 2021 reports a decrease of 5.9% following an annualized 5.2% increase in Q4. Compared to pre-pandemic quarter (Q4 2019), the UK economy is 8.7% smaller in Q1 2021. For Q1 2021, service and production output declined while construction output was up.

Major drags on activity occurred with school closures and lower retail sales in early 2021. Accommodation and food services declined from coronavirus restrictions closing non-essential establishments including hotels and restaurants. Other services were also down with health being among the few sector increases as there was increases in testing and vaccination spending. 

Production activity was 3.6% lower than pre-pandemic levels as manufacturing and mining were down in Q1 2021. Construction output rose in the quarter but remains 3.4% below pre-pandemic levels.
