UK RETAIL SALES, APRIL 2021

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales increased sharply in April 2021 reflecting the impact of eased COVID-19 restrictions. Retail sales volumes were 10.6% above February 2020 levels. Retail sales values were 9.9% higher than in February 2020.                                                                                                           

  • Month-over-month (Apr 2021 vs Mar 2021) retail sales value increased 9.2% while the retail sales volume (adjusted for price changes) increased 9.2%.
  • Year-over-year (Apr 2021 vs Mar 2021) retail sales value increased 43.4% and retail sales volume increased 42.4%.
  • Year-to-date (Jan-Apr 2021 vs Jan-Apr 2020) retail sales value increased 7.7% while volumes increased 8.1%. 

 

Internet sales

  • Online retail sales decreased by 5.6% in April 2021 when compared with March 2021.
  • In April 2021, online sales share of all retail sales decreased to 30.0% from 34.7% in March 2021. Online sales share of all retail sales increased from 20.0% in February 2020 to 30.0% in April 2021.
