May 31, 2021INTERNET ACCESS IN CANADA, 2020 The results from the 2020 Canadian Internet Survey, conducted between November 2020 and March 2021 shows that, Canadians depended more on internet in 2020 to perform various activities such as work from home, study, keep in touch with loved ones and online services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
92.3% of Nova Scotians had household internet access through a fixed broad band connection in 2020. 94% of Canadians had household internet access through a fixed broad band connection in 2020. The highest household internet access was in Alberta (95.9%), British Columbia and Ontario (both at 95.1%). The lowest household internet access was in Manitoba (91.3%) and Quebec (91.7%).
72% of Canadians who knew their advertised internet speed reported internet download speed of 50 megabits per second (Mbps) or more. 95% of Canadian households who live in census metropolitan area or census agglomeration (CMA/CA) had a home internet connection compared with 88% of those living outside a CMA/CA. 76% of respondents living in a CMA/CA had 50 Mbps or more speed compared with 48% of those living outside a CMA/CA.
80% of Canadians reported having a mobile data plan for personal use. Approximately 81% of Canadians living in a CMA/CA had a mobile data plan compared with 73% of those living outside a CMA/CA.
Around 1.5% of Canadians reported having a mobile data plan while no home internet connection.
Statistics Canada noted that a more comprehensive article which will focus on the adoption and use of digital technologies by Canadians will be published on June 22, 2021.
